And welcome to the second BCA '92-'93 Alumni Update. I'm quite impressed at how many people have gotten in contact since the appearance of the first update! To me, the best part is that so many of you are now online, which means that postage costs decrease significantly. (BCA Marburg has expressed interest in the Update, but no financial aid is yet in sight. I'm working on it though!)
This time around, to conserve space, I have only included new addresses. If you would like to get in touch with someone, but their address isn't listed here, get in touch with me and I'll help you out as much as I can.
Well, that's enough babbling for now. Keep those cards, letters and e-mails coming. Look for the next Update/Occasional in early June.
Yours,
Karen Jochimsen

"New stuff around here.... I just started grad school this January. I'm going to Drexel for a master's in information systems. Currently I'm on the five year plan taking one class per semester - must accelerate at some later time.
The job is the same....
My Germany plans.... I was going to go in Feb (great prices less than $300!!!!) but school looks like it will get in the way so I'll probably be over for my semester break march 20 - 30 or so..."
Martin just wrote to inform me that he will be in Germany for about 10 days from March 19-30. Give him a buzz at his aunt's house in Garmisch at 08821-50660 if you're in the neighborhood!

Shad Engkilterra
Shad dropped me a note in early February (which I promptly misplaced! ACK!). He told me that he is working as the night manager at the Super 8 motel, which has its ups and downs (ups: he sees his boss only when Shad arrives and leaves; downs: it's the night-shift). He also wrote that two (!) of his poems were to be published, one even winning first prize. Congratulations! I seem to remember him mentioning classes that he was taking. Shad, please write again and I promise I won't lose the letter again! --kj

Oops! Contrary to the last report, the campus over which Dr. Martin presides is NOT one for Continuing Ed.! In a recent call, Mary Ellen explained that is operates mainly independent from the University of Maryland, as a residential 4-year college. In other news, they are off for a few days to Poland during their Spring Break. I hope to welcome them back to Marburg during the 35th Anniversary celebration!

Bryson surfaced in late February. He is currently living in Arlington, VA with Lori Vaerewyck - SoSe'93). He is working as Manager of Operations of an aviation consulting firm. In the past years he worked mainly in politics helping run two statewide campaigns (one for U.S. Senate, and the other Governor) - In between the two campaigns he worked on Capitol Hill as Administrative Director for Senator Joseph Biden. He hasn't had much chance to use his German.
He also reports that Lori is working at the World Bank at the foreign currency exchange desk. She can be reached via e-mail at lorivee@aol.com

"I'm now working in Sales at Advanced FibreCommunications, and am applying to school for this fall. (I'm switching from secondary to elementary ed., so I'll be in school for one year.) Till then I'm just a workin' fool. Looks like I won't make it to Marburg in April, but hope to come soon. It'll likely be the summer after I finish my credential--'99. Wade, Martin, Tina, and I are talking about a trip through the Greek Isles, w/ a stopover in Germany. Whatya think?"

"I have news for you! About the time you wrote your cover letter for this alumni update I started working full time at Schering Plough. During November '97 I applied and interviewed extensively for a few positions here at Schering. The position I'm in now is a far cry from what I was searching for, BUT it has potential to develop into an international position.
"I'm the Sales Intranet Specialist for the Sales Department. Basically, I'm developing and maintaining internet web pages for the Schering Domestic Sales force. It's a fun job, really! The people here are great to work with which helps. This is a new area and venture for Schering and there's so much to learn and to create. I have lots of ideas about how this Internet stuff can expand to their international locations. First, I must learn some practical, technological skills before that can happen.
"So as of late, I'm not using my German at all, except for an occasional e-mail or letter. Hope to visit Marburg this year sometime--sooner than later."

He will be taking a group to Germany from April 9-17th. It's one of those package deals where they have a pre-determined itinerary. Unfortunately, they won't be able to be in Marburg.
"The trip's a high school set up with 35 kids, 4 adults, and two teachers, which include me, another teacher, my wife ( can you imagine that?), as well as the other teacher's husband. We're landing in Luxemburg, headed to Trier, Regensburg, Munich and then South. Typical tour deal. I do miss Marburg."
When asked whether he can still remove a gummie bear from his nose using only his tongue, he replied, "I've lost a few too many gummie bears up my nose, so that trick is one for the books. I'd be interested, however, to check out those pictures you're referring to. Maybe somehow I could see them?" Sorry, Paul, but those photos are over my garage in Boston. Maybe my mom might be able to send a few over, though....

In other Marburg-related news, the current Marburg government just annouced that they will be closing the Freibad (now located past the youth hostel on the banks of the Lahn) as of this summer. Due to the closing of the Luisebad there is no indoor pool in downtown Marburg, so they have decided to kill two birds with one stone: build a giant water-type park on the Trojedamm (in the Weidenhausen part of town -- remember where they rented out paddle boats in the summer?). This will include both an indoor pool and an outdoor water complex, with a building connecting both areas. Funding has just been approved, and they are talking about a completion date of 2000. Until then, Marburgers will either have to be content with the indoor pool in Marbach or somehow get out to the Baggersee in Niederweimar.
In the next few weeks, I will have my hands full, helping the current director, Jonathan Reed, prepare for the 35th Anniversary celebration. Planned are a contract signing ceremony between the University president and the BCA president, Allen Deeter, a concert in the Alte Universität, a symposium with four speakers (Allen Deeter, the current BCA president, John Gingrich, the Dean of the University of La Verne, Dr. Werner Schaal, the current president of the Philipps-Universität, as well as a fourth speaker, who at this time has not yet been named), plus the banquet on April 15. Many people have been invited, including the University's top brass, the presidents of all the consortium colleges, guest families, German exchange students to BCA colleges, as well as current and former BCA students. Believe it or not, there are three separate exchange years represented in Marburg alone, not including those currently spending a year abroad. If you are going to be in Marburg for the party, let me know ASAP!! Only then can I guarantee you a ticket to the banquet.
As always, I hope this update (Occasional?!) finds you happy and healthy. Keep those letters coming!
